How long does it take to become a skin esthetician?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

It takes between 3 to 9 months to a year to become a skin esthetician. The time it takes largely depends on the type of program you choose and the amount of time you devote to studying.

The educational requirements can vary from program to program. However, most students should expect to complete between 600 to 1,200 hours of training in a standard esthetician program. Beyond that, each state sets regulations on how long esthetician programs need to be.

A full-time student can typically complete their program in about nine months. During the program, candidates are taught how to perform exfoliations, photo light facials, and medical peels.

Other skills they learn include applying makeup to cover up burns and other skin trauma. Typically to pass the program, demonstrate their skills in a clinical setting.

All estheticians are required to be licensed before they can legally practice. Licensure requirements can vary from state to state, but most states require that one pass a written and practical examination. An esthetician program, for example, can require as few as 350 instructional hours (Pennsylvania) or as many as 1,500 hours (Alabama).

Apprenticeship programs in states that approve them take longer to complete. In some states, more credit hours or certifications may be required. Many cosmetology schools offer esthetics programs, though there are also stand-alone esthetics schools.
