How long does it take to become a veterinary technician?
It typically takes two to four years to become a veterinary technician. This depends on whether a person pursues an associate's degree or a bachelor's degree in veterinary technology or animal science.
While enrolled in a veterinary technology program of choice, students can expect to take classes including biochemistry, anatomy and physiology, primary animal care, and anesthesia training. They will also learn about animal diseases, pathology, and pharmaceuticals.
During this education, they must do mandatory hands-on training that includes working a certain number of hours at a veterinary hospital. This is where they learn how to do fundamental tasks like obtaining blood samples, taking x-rays, and assisting in surgery.
After completing the program, the graduate can take a state or national board examination to become a registered or certified veterinary technician. Once they pass the exam, they are considered veterinary technicians and can begin to build experience and choose a specialization.
