How long does it take to become an accountant?
It takes four years to become an accountant. Most entry-level positions require a bachelor's degree, which typically takes four years to complete.
This may take less time if you earned college credit in high school and can apply to your degree plan, or it may take more if you choose to add on additional classes. Generally, though, the time frame is four years.
Typically, the best undergraduate degree to pursue if you want to be an accountant is accounting. Each school's program will be unique, but in almost all of them, you'll build a strong foundation in business administration and learn the technical skills required to be an accountant.
You'll also likely take classes in economics and statistics as well as more general math, science, and English classes. Many programs also require you to participate in an accounting internship and will give you credit for doing so.

Once you graduate, you can get an entry-level accounting job to kick off your career. You won't want to stop there, though, as earning additional certifications makes you a more valuable employee and will open up doors in the future.
