How long does it take to become an occupational health nurse?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 22, 2022

It takes six to eight years to become an occupational health nurse. To become a certified occupational health nurse, you will first need to be a fully licensed registered nurse with at least 3,000 hours of work experience in the occupational health field. This will take around 2 to 3 years of RN experience.

You'll first need to earn a four-year bachelor of science and nursing to get started. In some cases, candidates with a two-year associate's degree in nursing may be eligible. However, some states require a bachelor's degree.

Once you have earned your nursing degree, you must pass the NCLEX-RN. Then you must complete at least two years of professional nursing experience or 3,000 hours. Ideally, you will want to choose a position that specializes in occupational health nursing so you can gain on-the-job experience.

Before working as an occupational health nurse independently, you must become certified. There are two certifications available: Certified Occupational Health Nurse (COHN) or Certified Occupational Health Nurse - Specialist (COHN-S). Occupational health nurses can only hold one certificate. COHN and COHN-S are similar. The main difference is that COHN-S certification emphasizes administration over the clinical practice.
