How long does it take to get a paralegal certification?
It can take anywhere from six weeks to four years to get a paralegal certification, depending on the path that one takes to get there. There are many different pros and cons to the different pathways for becoming a paralegal, so you should choose the one that fits best for you.
There are many online programs where you can become a certified paralegal in six weeks. This will make you a legitimate paralegal, but it is important to note that there are many firms, especially larger, more prestigious firms, that will not hire someone with this type of certification. If you know the firm you'd like to work for accepts it, this is a way to go to start work quickly.
You can also choose to complete a six-month or twelve-month paralegal certification program. Some of these programs require you to already hold either an associate's or bachelor's degree, so this is a great option if you already hold a degree and are looking for a career change. Be sure to find a program that is ABA-approved.
There is also the option to finish either a two-year or four-year degree from a college or university in legal studies. These programs will allow you to have the most opportunities in being a paralegal but will take the longest time to complete.
