How long does it take to get a pilot's license?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Apr. 25, 2023

It typically takes two years to complete commercial pilot school and become licensed. To become a licensed commercial pilot, you must have at least 1500 hours of experience. Commercial pilots first receive their private pilot license and then pursue the commercial license. These both include necessary logged flying hours and additional training.

An aspiring commercial pilot may choose to pursue a bachelor's degree in professional flight. Typically, this takes around four years to complete. In this setting, you receive all the necessary training to become a pilot, but you also are required to take additional courses such as math or English. This gives you a broader degree once completed.
