This question is about diesel mechanic education.
Diesel mechanic school takes anywhere from six to nine months or up to two years to complete. The variance is because there are several different educational options for aspiring diesel mechanics.
There are two common educational paths to becoming a diesel mechanic and one other path that is less common. Here is a look at each:
Diesel mechanic certificate program. A diesel mechanic certificate program. These programs are shorter than diesel mechanic degree programs. Certificate programs in this field can be completed anywhere from six to nine months.
These programs are a good option for those who want to start working in the field as soon as possible. They don't require any general education classes.
Diesel mechanic degree programs. There are trade schools and community colleges that offer diesel mechanic degree programs. These normally take around two years to complete.
The education in these programs is more well-rounded and includes general education classes and diesel mechanic classes. These dive deeper into the science and math involved in the field.
No formal training. It is also possible to become a diesel mechanic without any formal training. However, this is the less common option as it can take longer to find an entry-level job that will give you a good training baseline.
This option also results in diesel mechanics earning less and having more difficulty working their way up the ladder.
Certification programs. The National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is one of several organizations that allows diesel mechanics to become certified in their field.
Certifications help demonstrate skills and expertise in this area to employers. Certification programs have different requirements and take varying amounts of time to finish.
