How many hours can a 15-year-old work in Pennsylvania?

A 15-year-old in Pennsylvania can work for different amounts of hours depending on whether a school is in session or not in session.

When school is in session these minors can work:

  • 3 hours per school day

  • 8 hours per non-school day

  • 18 total per school week

  • 40 hours total per week or six full-time days per week during a school week

When school is not in session these minors can work:

  • 8 hours per school day or non-school day

  • 40 hours per school week

  • 40 total hours per non-school week

  • No more than 6 consecutive workdays ( six work days in a row)

Minors at the ages of 14 and 15 in Pennsylvania are not allowed to work before 7 am or after 7 pm during the school year. However, they can work as late as 9 pm from June 1st until Labor Day (School summer vacation) except the night preceding a school day. These minors are also only allowed to work outside of school hours when school is in session.
