By - Mar. 13, 2023

A 16-year-old can work an unlimited number of hours in Texas. While there are no limitations on hours of work for children who are 16 or 17, the state encourages employers to take care that their work schedules do not cause problems for the young employees under any school truancy laws or local curfews that might apply

A 16-year-old in Texas may be able to work as many hours as he or she likes, however, there are restrictions on where they can work, including:

  • In or around plants or establishments manufacturing or storing explosives

  • Involving the driving of motor vehicles and outside helpers (for example, someone riding on the outside of the vehicle to pick up trash bins):

  • In or about any place where logging or sawmill operations are in progress

  • Connected with coal mining

  • In connection with mining, other than coal

  • Operating or helping operate power-driven circular saws, band saws and guillotine shears, abrasive cutting discs, reciprocating saws, chain saws, and woodchippers.

  • Wrecking, demolition, and ship-breaking operations

  • Roofing operations and work on or about a roof

A minor younger than 16 is allowed to work no more than 18 hours in a school week, and no more than three hours a day. During prolonged breaks from school, those under the age of 16 may work 40 hours a week, but not more than eight hours a day. No minor under the age of 16 may work between the hours of 7:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m.
