How many hours can a 17-year-old work in New Jersey?

By Kate Swindlehurst - Mar. 13, 2023

A 17-year-old can work up to 40 hours per week in New Jersey. Along with a weekly limit, they also cannot work more than 8 hours per day and cannot work more than six days per week.

Along with restrictions on how many hours a 17-year-old may work in New Jersey, there are also hour restrictions. They cannot work before 6 AM or after 11 PM. There are exceptions to this, such as during school vacation season or on days not preceding a school day if written permission is granted from a parent or guardian.

It is important to note that Federal law states that minors cannot work after 7 PM when school is in session and 9 PM when school is not. They also cannot work before 7 AM at any time. Federal law also defines a minor as someone under 18, so while New Jersey may have looser restrictions for 17-year-olds, federal law does not.
