The number of hours that a minor can work in Arkansas depends on their age and the nature of the job. In most cases, a child working in Arkansas must be at least fourteen to be employed in the workforce. To employ a child under 16, the employer must obtain a work permit from the Arkansas Department of Labor.
In Arkansas, minors aged 14 and 15 years may work a maximum of eight hours total on school days and 18 hours total on non-school days. The total number of hours that a minor aged 14 or 15 may work when school is not in session is eight hours per day and 40 hours per week. Minors aged 16 or 17 may not work more than six hours per day and 48 hours per week.
A child under 16 years old working in Arkansas cannot work the following:
More than six days in any week
More than forty-eight hours in any week
More than eight hours on any day
Before 6:00 a.m. or after 7:00 p.m., except that one night preceding non-school days, they may work until 9:00 p.m.
There are limitations on the hours of work as well as the types of work a fourteen or fifteen-year-old can perform.
A minor under the age of 16 years old is restricted from working in a variety of occupations including anything that involves any dangerous chemicals, soldering, mining, manufacturing, billiard room, sewing with a machine, or any jobs that require the use of power-driven machinery including food slicers.
