The number of hours a minor can work in Iowa depends on the age of the minor and the nature of the work. Minors as young as 12 years old are allowed to work but restricted to specific types of jobs such as in agriculture. While minors under the age of 16 may be employed with parental consent and/or a work permit and are limited to 40 hours a week. Minors under 18 years old can work up to 50 hours a week. No minor living in Iowa is allowed to work on Sundays, except in certain limited circumstances.

Regardless of the age of the minor, all minors should be paid at least the same rate as adult workers, and overtime pay is required when working more than 8 hours a day or 40 hours a week. All minors must also be provided with a 30-minute break when working more than 5 consecutive hours. Finally, minors may not be employed in hazardous occupations, such as mining, manufacturing explosives, or operating dangerous machinery, unless they are at least 18 years of age and have special permission from the state.

The labor laws for minors living in Iowa under the age of 16 years old:

  • Minors aged 12 and 13 are limited to no more than 18 hours of work per week, and no more than 4 hours of work per day on school days.

  • Minors aged 12 and 13 may be employed as caddies or in certain types of agricultural work with parental consent and/or a work permit. Minors aged 17 and under must receive a work permit before they can begin employment.

  • Minors aged 14 and 15 may be employed in certain limited circumstances, such as in agricultural work, with parental consent and/or with a work permit.

  • Minors aged 14 and 15 are limited to a maximum of 8 hours of work per day, 40 hours per week, and 18 hours per week if attending school.

  • Minors aged 14 and 15 may not work before 7 a.m. or after 7 p.m. unless otherwise specified.

The labor laws for minors living in Iowa under the age of 16 years old:

  • Minors aged 16 and 17 may work up to 10 hours a day and 50 hours a week.

  • Minors between the ages of 16 and 18 may work in any lawful occupation, with the exception of a few hazardous occupations, unless a special permit is issued.

  • Minors aged 16 and 17 may not work before 6 a.m. or after 10 p.m.
