How many hours can a minor work in Washington?

When school is in session these minors have the ability to work:

• 3 hours per school day

• 8 hours per non-school day (Saturday, Sunday, or Holiday)

• 18 total per school week

• 40 hours total per non-school week

Minors between the ages of 14 and 15 in Washington are not allowed to work before 7 am or after 7 pm. However, they are allowed to work as late as 9 pm from June 1st until Labor Day (school summer vacation) with the exception of the night preceding a school day. These minors are also only allowed to work outside of school hours when school is in session.

• 16- and 17-year-old minors

When school is in session these minors have the ability to work:

• 8 hours per school day

• 40 hours per school week

• 48 total per non-school week

These minors are sometimes allowed to work varying schedules when it is agreed upon by the parents, employer, school, and the student themselves. In general, minors in Washington are not allowed to have work start times between 12 am and 6 am.

16-year-old minors in Washington are allowed to work as late as 9 pm from June 1st until Labor Day (school summer vacation) with the exception of the night preceding a school day. These minors are also only allowed to work outside of school hours when school is in session.

17-year-old minors in Washington can work as late as 10 pm on any day between Sunday and Thursday, and as late as 12 am (midnight) on Fridays, Saturdays, and on any other day that is followed by a day off from school. They can also work as early as 5 am when school is not in session.

16- and 17-year-old minors may not work in an establishment open to the public between 8 pm and 6 am unless another employee at least 18 years of age also works during the same hours as the minor.
