This question is about what a chef does.

How many hours do chefs work?

By - Mar. 13, 2023

Chefs work around 10 to 12 hours per day, averaging around 50 to 70 hours a week. At some restaurants, chefs are expected to work seven days a week for 12 to 14 hours each shift. This includes working nights, weekends, and holidays.

A typical day for a chef is as follows:

  • The Day Shift (8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.) - restaurants that are busy during the lunch hours. It also depends on the amount of prep work needed

  • The Strarigh Shift (2:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) - this is a common shift in kitchens with a larger number of chefs. A lot of the kitchen staff will come in at this time to prepare the food all afternoon ready for the evening service.

  • The Split Shift - (9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., 5:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.) - The most common shift among professional chefs! A chef will work the morning prepping and then deal with lunch service. They will then have a few hours break before returning to prep more for the evening service.

  • All Day Shift (9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.) - AFD on the rota lets the chefs know that they are very busy and the Head Chef is not expecting them to be able to take their afternoon break.
