How many hours do firefighters work?

By Zippia Team - Oct. 25, 2022

Firefighters work an average of 56 hours a week. Firefighters are on duty or call 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Individual shift hours vary from the fire department to the fire department.

Many firefighters work 48-hour shifts in which they sleep at the fire station. They may be called into action at any time during this period.

Certain fire departments also employ 10 to 12-hour shifts, these usually occur three to four days in a row for a firefighter.

Yet another variation at fire departments is a 15-hour shift that begins at 6 pm and ends at 9 am the next morning. During this shift, a firefighter may go to sleep at the station anytime after 12 am but must be ready to respond to any emergencies that could occur while they sleep.
