How many years does it take to become a civil engineer?

By Zippia Team - Nov. 10, 2021

It takes four years to become a civil engineer, on average. This is the amount of time most people require to complete their bachelor's degree in civil engineering, which is a requirement.

However, most civil engineers need to complete around four years of additional supervised work experience after graduation to achieve some level of independence within their profession.

These four additional years of supervised work experience make a civil engineer eligible to complete the Fundamentals of Engineering and Professional Engineering examinations. Only after passing these exams is a civil engineer truly licensed to practice. Attending graduate school would also add time to this process, but this is unnecessary, nor do most civil engineers choose to do so.
