This question is about volleyball player salaries.
The median salary for a professional volleyball player in the United States is $44,680 per year. The salary range varies greatly and can be anywhere from $19,910 to over $187,200 per year. The middle 50% of professional volleyball players makes $28,400 while the top 75% make at least $187,200.
The salary ranges are highly dependent on what league the player is in. There are approximately 20 professional volleyball leagues throughout the world, most of which are in Europe, Asia, and South America. Typically, there is 1 professional grade league per country. France is an exception with 2 pro leagues.
The foreigner quota is by far the biggest influencing factor on how much a volleyball player can earn. Each league only allows a certain number of foreigners to play on contract for a club. The fewer foreigners clubs are allowed to sign, the higher these players are paid on average.
In Russia, the foreigner quota is 2 players per team and in Poland it is 3. In France, the quota is 6 and in Germany there is no quota. This is one of the primary reasons why athletes will earn more money in Russia or Poland as opposed to France and Germany. The exception of course is if you are Russian or Polish and playing in your home league.
The second factor is obviously skills. The better you are, the more you will earn. Your skill level will determine what leagues, coaches, and agents are interested in signing you to their team. The positon that you play on the court will also have a pretty big influence on how much money you will earn.
Outside hitters and opposites tend to get the higher salary ranges. Liberos tend to be the least valued position and have the lowest salary ranges. In most leagues, the liberos position is filled with local talent.
