How much does a special agent make a year?
Special FBI agents make around $55,000 a year, on average. FBI agents are paid according to the General Schedule (GS) payscale and receive a generous FBI agent benefits package. They have the chance to continuously improve their skills and rise through the ranks while serving their country.
The salary and benefits depend on location, grade, and step. FBI agents are paid according to the GS pay scale and can earn anywhere between $50,000 and $65,000 per year, reports the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM).
Their base salaries start at the GL-10 pay grade. As they gain experience, they can advance to the GS-13 grade level in a non-supervisory role. Later, they may qualify for further promotions and advance to the GS-14 and GS-15 pay grades.
For example, according to OPM, FBI agents who reach GS-13, step 1 pay level receive an annual salary of nearly $79,000. As they move up in step, they can earn up to $103,000 per year (GS-13, step 10). At GS-14, an agent will receive a base salary of $93,000 to $122,000 per year. Experience, location, and job duties all come into play.
