How much PTO is normal?

Some companies elect to offer their PTO in one lump sum of paid days off that can be used at the employee's discretion. This is called flexible PTO.

Flexible paid time off, in most cases, does not require employees to give their employers the specific purpose of their PTO, like the items listed above. Instead of having time off dedicated to things like vacation and sick leave, employees get a set number of paid days off per year and can use those days as they see fit.

While other companies offer their PTO packages in predetermined categories, such as:

• Personal days PTO

Companies that choose this option will indicate various days per category rather than giving employees the option of one lump sum of PTO days that is used with flexible PTO.

Again, the normal amount of PTO is two to three weeks per year, but this can vary depending on factors like:

• The country the company operates in

• The size of the company

• The industry of the company

• The job position of each employee

According to the United States Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the average number of paid vacation days for private sector employees in the United States is ten days per year.

However, this average increases depending on how long a specific employee has worked at an organization, meaning years of service may increase the average amount of PTO.
