How old do you have to be to get a job?

By Justin Parker - Apr. 2, 2023

How old you have to be to get a job varies state by state, with some placing the minimum age at 14, and other states placing the minimum age at 15.

The United States Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) sets the minimum age for employment at 14 years of age. However, there are limitations and restrictions concerning the specific types of work and jobs minors under the age of 16 can perform and have. There are also limits on the number of hours certain minors can work while in school.

In addition, some states and local governments also have regulations and laws pertaining to minors working and might require work permits or written parental consent for minors of certain ages.
