How to become a CPA without a degree
To become a CPA without a degree, you must pass the CPA exam in either Alaska, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, or Massachusetts. If you pass in any of the states you then have to practice accounting in that same state.
However, these five states have different requirements when you do this, here is a breakdown of each state in which you can take the CPA exam without a degree:
Alaska has the easiest route and requires, at most, 15 credit hours of accounting courses. However, the candidate must have one year of work experience before they can be certified.
In Georgia, you need 20 credit hours of accounting courses and 18 credit hours that the state will recognize as upper-level accounting courses.
Hawaii has fairly lenient requirements with only 18 credit hours of accounting courses needed.
Maine requires only 15 credit hours of accounting courses. However, candidates also need at least 4,000 hours of relevant work experience under a CPA.
In Massachusetts, you need 21 credit hours of accounting courses. They also have specific rules on which accounting courses need to be included in those 21 credit hours.
In every other state, you need a degree in accounting to take the CPA exam.
