How to become a surveyor without a degree

By Zippia Team - Nov. 15, 2022

You become a surveyor without a degree by taking the Fundamentals of Surveying exam. To be a surveyor, you must, at the very least, have a high school diploma or GED equivalent. Though some companies only require a high school diploma, many are looking for candidates with some additional training in survey technology or geography.

Many companies require a bachelor's degree in surveying, mapping, or geomatics. Additional coursework in areas such as the following is also desired:

  • Geometry

  • Trigonometry

  • Algebra

  • Drafting

  • Computer-aided drafting (CAD)

  • Geography

  • Geographic information systems (GIS)

  • Cartography

Depending on what state you are planning to work in, you may have to become licensed before you can start working. All states require surveyors to take the Fundamentals of Surveying exam which is administered by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying (NCEES).

Once you pass the test, you can begin hands-on training under the supervision of a licensed surveyor. This hands-on training component usually lasts about two years and will give you the work experience needed to take the Principles and Practice of Surveying exam.

In addition to gaining the proper education and licensing, internships are a great way to get your foot in the door and gain more hands-on experience. Many companies have summer internship opportunities available. Working with a survey crew every day is also a great way to understand the expectations and responsibilities of the role.

You can also join surveyor associations or organizations. Several professional societies focus on building the careers of their members and promoting new survey methods, including the National Society of Professional Surveyors (NSPS) and the Imaging and Geospatial Information Society (ASPRS).
