How to become a teacher without an education degree

By Zippia Team - Sep. 7, 2022

To become a teacher without a degree in education, you must complete an alternative teacher preparation program. Generally, these programs must be approved by the state's board of education and lead to a post-graduate certificate or a master's degree plus licensure.

Public schools in the United States require teachers to have at least a bachelor's degree. Certain private schools do not have this requirement, although this is rare.

You can also still become a teacher if your degree is in something other than education. However, you must complete an alternative teacher certification program. Other teaching-related jobs both in and outside of public and private school settings are:

  • Tutor

  • Nanny

  • Daycare assistant

  • Personal trainer

  • Teacher's aide

  • Substitute teacher

  • Athletic coach

  • Tour guide
