You cannot become an addiction counselor without a degree, and you must obtain a certification in alcohol and drug abuse counseling. The educational path to becoming an addiction counselor is rather straightforward and consists of:

Most states require 415 academic hours of addiction/substance abuse counseling to qualify for work in the field, as well as a specific number of practicum hours. Each state's requirements are different, so it is important to find out how many hours are required for your specific state.
