Put your creativity on display with staged event photos. Showcase your eye for centerpieces, your use of natural elements, and your ability to stage venues for events.
Your photos should include before and after shots that showcase your ability to transform the space. Use these photos to create an online presence through photo galleries, blog posts, and videos. Don't overwhelm yourself by using too many platforms. Choose one or two and focus on those channels.
In addition to family and friends, look at working with charitable organizations that are also looking for event planners on a budget. There are usually opportunities for lead event planner positions as well as supporting roles. You can also join committees to gain experience that you can add to your portfolio.
Another option is to help with events that are taking place at local schools in your area. Again, these are usually events that are looking to be done on a budget. Wherever possible, get testimonials from your clients that you can use to boost your credibility.
The more you are able to add to your portfolio, the better. Continue to share your portfolio with networking contacts and let them know that you are open to referrals. Continue to build your skills, gain experience, and establish connections through your social media and online channels.
