How to count money as a cashier

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

To count money as a cashier, you need to verify the drawer balance, make changes for customers, and balance the drawer. Here are some details on these strategies:

  • Verify the drawer balance

When starting your shift as a cashier you must first count the money in your drawer to make sure it matches the amount on your establishment's records. This prevents you from turning in a drawer at the end of your shift that is off.

All sales will add to this drawer's base balance. Most of the time this process should be done in the presence of a supervisor or manager.

  • Make changes for customers

Many customers use debit, credit, and other forms of digital payments these days, however, some still do pay in cash. And when a customer pays in cash, they often don't pay with exact change.

You should use the count-up process when making changes for customers.

To do this, you take the amount of money the customer gives you and set it on the register. Then you take the purchase amount and count up to the amount the customer handed you.

Once this stage is complete, place the cash into the drawer and close it. Then hand the customers change to them.

  • Balance the drawer

At the end of your shift you need to balance the drawer. You need to count the total amount of the till and add on any non-cash transactions, such as:

  • Credit cards

  • Debit cards

  • Checks

  • ApplePay (or similar)

The ending balance needs to be the sum of all the transactions you cashiered and the opening balance of the drawer.
