This question is about nurse certifications.
To get a CCRN certification, you must first meet the eligibility criteria established by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). This includes clinical hours, continuing education credits, and the ability to pass the certification exam.
To become a Certified Critical Care Nurse (CCRN), requirements include having a current, unencumbered RN license, a minimum of 1,750 hours of direct bedside care of critically ill adult patients within the past two years, and a minimum of 30 continuing education hours in critical care nursing within the past three years.
Once you have met these criteria, you must apply for the AACN. This application will include a fee, a signed attestation from your employer verifying your clinical hours as a critical care nurse, and official transcripts from your nursing program.
The application will also require you to answer several questions about your experience as a critical care nurse.
Once your application has been reviewed and approved, you must take and pass the CCRN Certification Examination. The National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) administers the exam, which consists of multiple-choice questions and a computer-based simulation.
The CCRN Certification Examination exam is a three-hour, computer-based exam that covers topics related to the care of critically ill adult patients, such as pharmacology, physiology, and pathophysiology.
The exam consists of 150 multiple-choice questions designed to assess the knowledge and clinical judgment in patient management, assessment, diagnosis, and intervention.
Once you have passed the exam, you will be officially certified as a CCRN. The certification is valid for five years and can be renewed following the AACN's Continuing Education Guidelines.
