To get a GIA certification, you must ensure that you have high-quality diamonds. The Gemological Institution of America (GIA) tests diamonds on certain criteria and then uses its requirements to demonstrate a high-quality diamond.

Although many use the phrase "GIA-certified diamond," there are no actual certified diamonds; GIA simply provides a grade scale for diamonds. This term generally refers to diamonds rated and scored well by GIA. So, to score well, you want to have quality diamonds that the GIA rates.

A representative from the GIA tests diamonds based on their weight, color, clarity, and cut. From there, they can give a score to the diamonds. A high score generally correlates to what is commonly known as a GIA-certified diamond.
