How to get a HACCP certification

By Zippia Team - Dec. 9, 2022

You get a HACCP certification by completing a plan and undergoing a certification audit. This can be a lengthy and somewhat costly process that certifies the safety of your company's food process.

The first step toward HACCP certification is assembling a team to work with an independent auditor during the certification process. This team typically comprises employees representing the various departments or stages of your company's food processing journey.

The team will then begin constructing the plan that will later be submitted to the auditor. Part one of the audit involves comparing the team-submitted plan to your company's systems.

These systems are not under evaluation at this stage; the auditor is simply evaluating the plan. It is not uncommon that an auditor will go back to the team for clarification or make suggested changes to the plan.

The second part of the audit evaluates the systems designed to prepare food safely. The actual audit costs range from $400 to $2,000 per day, depending on your chosen certifying body.

The two-part on-site certification takes two to five days. Certification lasts up to five years when recertification may be necessary.
