How to get a plumbing license

To receive a journeyperson plumber license, you need to complete an apprenticeship and pass the licensing exam. The apprenticeship is typically four years long and prepares you for a job as a plumbing journeyperson. It also helps prepare you to pass the licensing exam.

Once you have passed the exam, you can begin working as a plumbing journeyperson. Should you choose to pursue becoming a master plumber, you need to also complete a licensing exam. To qualify for taking that exam, you need to have at least six months of experience working as a journeyperson. You then need to pass the state-specific licensing exam.
