This question is about auto technician certifications.
To get an ASE certification, you must pass an ASE test and have hands-on experience. This is a difficult test requiring multiple years of experience in one of several areas of focus.
The ASE has certification tests for multiple areas of automotive repair. You can take tests specific to repair technicians, parts specialists, collision estimators, or service consultants. Approximately 66% pass on their first attempt.
You may register for and take the test before accumulating the necessary work experience but will not receive certification until you can prove experience in the field.
Proving your work experience is an important part of becoming ASE certified. All four certification areas require at least two years of experience, with some requiring three years.
Depending on your employment experience, several experience types overlap and fulfill multiple areas, such as repair technician and parts specialist. In some cases, formal training may be substituted for experience.
