How to get an HVAC job with no experience

You need to buckle down and study hard while in your program. Get good grades and prove yourself as the best. People want to help others that work hard and are trying to better themselves. While being the class clown may have been fun in high school, that is not the route to take here.

Work hard in class and strive to be the absolute best that you can be, and your instructors will take notice. Build relationships with your classmates as these relationships may prove useful down the line (you never know where you or they will end up in the business).

The HVAC job market can be competitive, and it can be difficult to find a job even after graduating from a vocational school. In this case, it is good to get certifications that show you are serious about working in the field. Good certifications to start with are the EPA 608 Universal CFC Refrigerant Handling License and Electrical Training Card.

Any certification that is trade-related can be beneficial. Certifications can also help you to build a portfolio that can showcase your skills. Think about projects you have worked on and how they can show your aptitude. Take pictures and document the work you have done and the processes that you followed.

Your portfolio should show your mechanical skills as well as your ability to organize your work projects and your motivation to better yourself.

It is possible that a specialized job in HVAC will still require one to five years of experience. For that reason, it is recommended that you pursue a job as a general maintenance technician. These jobs are generally easier to land with little to no experience and are a great way to build skills in building and facility operations.

Look into hospitals, hotels, and apartments. Buildings like these generally have HVAC equipment, and their technicians tend to lack HVAC education. Your vocational certificates and degrees may be a huge benefit to getting hired at one of these facilities and can help to bolster your resume for future positions.

Once you have earned a job as a general maintenance technician, work and learn as much as you can about the systems. Use this knowledge to update and rewrite your resume. Reapply for the HVAC contractor/specialization positions and use your newfound knowledge and skills to show your ability to grow in the industry.
