You must complete an HVAC certification program to get HVAC certification, and then from there, you can become HVAC licensed. Typically, it can take between six months to two years to complete an HVAC certification. The amount of time depends entirely on the type of program you enroll in to complete the requirements for HVAC certification.

Some programs are accelerated but require you to spend a lot of time, daily, to complete. Most programs are offered through trade schools and vocational schools and may include additional subjects.

After completing whichever program you decide on, you then can apply and pass the exam to complete the HVAC certification. Once you pass the exam, you can begin working as a certified HVAC technician. Once you begin working, you can work for a few years to gain experience to then get an HVAC license.

Not every state requires an HVAC license. Many states do not have this as an option, and solely require HVAC certification for someone to begin working. In states that require licensing, they typically require certification, and then experience, for someone to receive an HVAC license.
