How to get into engineering

By Roger Raber - Apr. 2, 2023

Getting into engineering begins with earning a four-year degree in one of many engineering fields. In contrast, an important component, earning your degree, is only the first of several steps in becoming an engineer.

A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university is a requirement to become an engineer. Undergraduates will choose the area of engineering in which they wish to work and earn a degree in that field.

Many schools offer a five-year master's program to engineering students, allowing them to earn their graduate degree in a shorter period.

Graduates must then pass the NCEES FE exam. The National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying will administer the exam and present a license to those who pass.

This license will allow graduates to work as engineers-in-training or interns. Before becoming fully licensed, engineering interns must have four years of work experience before they can sit for the Professional Engineer exam.

Passing the PE exam will result in candidates receiving a professional license in the specific area of engineering for which they are qualified.
