If you have a legitimate reason to leave work early, be sure to just tell the truth, as that is the easiest to explain, and you won't have any potential of getting caught in a lie.If you simply want to leave work without getting in trouble because you do not want to be there anymore, just simply make up an excuse involving some sort of family emergency.
You can always say that a friend is having car trouble or a roommate locked themselves out of your house to leave work early. This only works if it is right at the end of the day or else you may need to return afterward. This works because it's not something that people generally ask for more information on and you also won't need to ever do any follow-up with it.
A more difficult-to-execute but more sympathy-inducing excuse would be a family emergency or illness. This can present problems as your coworkers eventually ask for any updates, and that could be difficult if you forget that you ever said something. You also don't want to repeat the same lie multiple times, but it is a good excuse that generally fully excuses you for leaving.
