How to write a nonprofit business plan

By Kate Swindlehurst - Apr. 25, 2023

To write a nonprofit business plan, consider it your business roadmap. Your nonprofit business plan should be clear on your goals, challenges, and plan of attack.

You should be able to set both short-term and long-term goals for your nonprofit business, and then you can look back over them in the future and focus on each step to get there.

The first step for writing a nonprofit business plan is creating an overall summary of your business and plan for it. You want to ensure that you answer questions such as, "What does your nonprofit do, and how does it do that?"

"Also, what do you sell, and who is your audience? How do you reach your audience?" The answers to these questions should summarize your business plan.

You should start with writing an organization description. The description is you explaining what your nonprofit does and how it does that and should summarize what you want your business to do and how it can get that done. You should also identify the structure of your nonprofit organization in this section.

You also need to complete a market analysis, which helps you to understand your intended market and competition within that market. You can research industry trends and conduct analyses. Your findings should be part of this section as well.

While your organization description includes the structure of your nonprofit, you should also include a section in your business plan that outlines management and organization.

This section should focus on groups such as a board of directors, staff, volunteers, donors, and recipients. You may choose to have some of these overlap, such as recipients and staff.

You then need to ensure your business plan includes information on programs, products, and services. This sums up what your organization offers. These should include everything offered to customers, donors, recipients, and volunteers.

You should also document customer segmentation, where you note potential customers, donors, and recipients.

Your business plan should also include a marketing plan. After you have completed customer segmentation, you can know how best to address all your customers. Your marketing plan should lay out plans on addressing how best to market your products, programs, and services to your different sections of consumers.

You also need to include logistics and operations plans within your business plan. This section focuses on how you plan on running your business. This should include how you plan to raise money and execute your company's mission.

You should also include operations information, such as shipping, fulfillment, equipment, production, and facilities information.

Nonprofit business plans are unique in their impact plans. Impact plans typically outline the change a company wants to take in an industry. For nonprofits, you are outlining the change you want to inspire. It is your mission statement for your business and shows what impact you want to see with your work.

While having a goal for your company is incredible, it cannot come to be unless you have the financial backing to run your nonprofit. That is why a nonprofit business plan must include a solid financial plan.

If you are worried about how best to collect the information for creating a business plan for your nonprofit organization, you can find resources online that can help you figure out what steps you need to take to complete your business plan.

Feel free to contact other nonprofits to see if they can provide guidance. Many people are willing to help with nonprofits.
