The job of a direct support professional can be described as someone who cares for individuals experiencing developmental or intellectual disabilities or illnesses. Their main duties typically include helping patients complete basic housekeeping tasks, transporting patients to appointments, or other social outings.
A direct support professional (DSP) cares for people with disabilities. Direct support professionals encourage them to lead independent lives and to be integrated into their communities. Direct care professionals work for schools, companies, religious institutions, and assisted living homes.
Common duties performed in direct support professional roles include the following:
Provide direct care to those with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
Perform personal care tasks, including assistance with basic personal hygiene and grooming, feeding, and ambulation, medical monitoring, and healthcare-related tasks.
Foster positive relationships between caretakers and individuals served.
Ensure client safety and maintain a safe environment.
Remind and assist clients with self-administration of medications (with proper training).
Report changes in the client's condition or family situation to administrators and supervisors.
Perform home management functions such as light housekeeping, laundry, bed making, and cleaning.
Plan meals, shop for groceries, prepare and serve food/meals, feed, and clean up.
Accompany clients to scheduled appointments and transport clients or run errands for clients.
