ICU vs. critical care

The difference between ICU and critical care is that ICU care is given in a hospital's Intensive Care Unit (ICU), while critical care is a broader term that refers to medical care for patients experiencing life-threatening or serious injuries or illnesses.

Hospital ICUs are specialized units that can provide intensive and comprehensive medical care for patients with life-threatening or extremely serious health conditions.

An ICU is staffed by many different types of doctors, nurses, nurse assistants, medical assistants, and other key personnel. Patients are always under intense supervision in an ICU. Critical care is a type of medical care that can be provided in several medical settings, including a hospital's ICU.

However, doctors and nurses can also employ critical care in emergency rooms (ERs), administered in ambulances by paramedics or EMTs, and in operating rooms by surgeons. Critical care is often a multi-medical discipline process.
