Is a history degree useless?

By Zippia Team - Jan. 8, 2023

No, a history degree is not useless. There are many applicable skills that a history degree gives people. There are also positions, such as a history teacher or a museum curator, where a history degree directly affects this position and is often necessary for future employment opportunities.

In colleges and universities, there are often two paths of degrees: degrees that directly align with a position and degrees that indirectly align with positions. Directly aligning degrees are degrees such as accounting to become an accountant. History can indirectly affect many positions, such as becoming a lawyer, a reporter, and even a businessman.

If you choose to pursue a position that is only indirectly related to history, you should complete internships and work experiences during your college career to gain experience in that related field. Once you graduate, majors often do not matter, so long as you have solid experience and a degree.
