Is a psychologist a doctor?
No, a psychologist is not a doctor. However, many psychologists are doctors. Depending on their training, Psychologists can earn medical degrees such as psychiatry or a research-based doctorate such as a developmental research psychologist.
In many cases, you will find psychologists are often doctors, but not medical doctors. Instead, they may be a Ph.D. (doctor of philosophy, usually research-focused) or a PsyD (doctor of psychology, usually with a clinical focus).
Each state has its own requirements for those who wish to practice psychology. For example, in California, a psychologist must have master's degrees and doctorates in psychology.
Licensed psychologists are qualified to do counseling and psychotherapy, perform psychological testing, and provide treatment for mental disorders. They are not, though, medical doctors. That means that, except for a few states, psychologists cannot write prescriptions or perform medical procedures.
Often a psychologist will work in association with a psychiatrist or other medical doctor who provides the medical treatment for mental illness while the psychologist provides the psychotherapy.
