Is a speech pathologist a doctor?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

No, a speech pathologist is not a doctor. A speech pathologist is a trained professional who assesses, diagnoses, treats, and helps to prevent communication and swallowing disorders in children and adults.

Unlike medical doctors, speech pathologists are not required to go through medical school to get a medical degree to practice this occupation.

To become a speech-language pathologist, you just need to complete a Council on Academic Accreditation (CAA) accredited master's program in speech pathology. The entire process from undergrad takes about six years to complete.

Meanwhile, to become a doctor, you first need to get a bachelor's degree and attend a four-year program in medical school, which takes about eight years to complete.

To get their license, speech pathologists need to complete a specific number of supervised clinical experience hours and pass a proficiency exam. Each state's licensing board determines these requirements for speech pathologists.

On the other hand, doctors need to complete a residency program after they get their degree and pass an examination, taking another 3 to 5 years to complete.
