By Zippia Team - Feb. 10, 2022

Yes, it is hard to become a police officer. While the path to becoming a police officer is fairly straightforward, it is a challenging career path to take and requires significant dedication, stamina, and time to gain a position in a competitive field.

The testing and training are designed to ensure that you're prepared for the risk and responsibility that comes with this career. The first step is to gain a high school diploma or GED. Pursuing some college courses or completing a bachelor's degree can make a person a more competitive applicant and help with career advancement.

If a person meets the eligibility requirements, they will need to pass entrance exams and interviews to be considered for a spot in a police academy. The exams will include a physical agility test and a written test covering reasoning, mathematical, and verbal ability in most departments.

After passing the exams and interviews, a person can apply to a police academy. During the six months in the police academy, a person will be mentally and physically pushed.

Classes will cover search and seizure, the law, and ethics. The student will be trained in the proper use of a firearm and undergo intense physical training.

Making it through the police academy is a challenging process. Yet even after this rigorous training, there is additional field training to help a young police officer adapt to real life in the community.

The office will spend about 8-12 weeks in-field training, where they will work with a senior officer to learn the ropes. After this, they will spend about a year on probation. During this time, superior officers will observe their work closely to ensure that they are prepared for the job.
