Is technical support a stressful job?

By Zippia Team - Dec. 17, 2021

Yes, technical support is a stressful job. However, that is entirely dependent on the clients you will be working with. Unfortunately, like all positions requiring customer service, you will be working with people who inherently have some sort of issue that you will need to fix.

The average person understands very little about computers and technology other than how to interact with pre-created programs, which are inherently designed to make the interface understandable for the average person.

When a customer experiences a technical issue outside their understanding, it can cause significant delays in their businesses and daily lives, so every job as a technical support technician comes with great urgency.

Technical support jobs are split into multiple different levels:

Level One - Help Desk: This is traditionally someone who answers calls to troubleshoot a client's problem alongside them. This is the most stressful of all the levels, as it requires significant customer service capability and patience.

Level Two - Local IT Person: This technician can handle more in-depth issues which level one may have been unable to handle.

Level Three+: Systems administrators, engineers, technicians, and developers who likely created the software, have a deep understanding of the technology and are only needed for critical failures.

Each role as a technical support technician carries varying amounts of stress alongside it. This being said, it is widely agreed that the lowest tier of IT technician (the Help Desk), along with its focus on results and volume, is the most stressful position and experiences the highest turn-over rate of any employee for the IT field.
