On-the-job medical coding training consists of learning and becoming fluent in different coding systems under the guidance of professional medical coders.
When you start your medical coding training, you will be exposed to different coding systems, such as the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), the Current Procedural Terminology (CPT), and the associated Healthcare Common Procedure Coding System (HCPCS).
You will be expected to already possess analytical and detail-oriented skills, but your training will also be a way to further hone these qualities.
You also will be expected to expand upon your knowledge in certain medical areas, such as the basics of disease processes, medical treatment plans and procedures, medical terminology, body systems, and fundamental coding in ICD-10.
Your training also exposes you to medical office software, billing procedures and protocols, and regulatory compliance policies.
After you have gained enough professional experience in these areas, you might want to obtain certifications, such as the Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) or the Certified Coding Specialist Physician-Based (CCS-P).
