What are job classifications?

Job classifications are systems that classify all jobs within a company. This system then puts all of them on a standardized scale based on the overall tasks, responsibilities, and pay for each job. It can also be referred to as "job evaluation."

Job classification is useful when determining whether a job title appropriately matches job specifications and standards, as the descriptions in job classifications should always be written to focus primarily on each position's responsibilities. Any time a new job is created at a company, it should also be added to the job classification system.
