What are legacy systems?

By Zippia Team - Feb. 1, 2023

Legacy systems refer to when companies use old computer systems, including computing software, programs, applications, programming languages, and hardware systems that have been deemed outdated related to their functionality in contrast to new technology.

Legacy systems normally represent technology systems that were considered high-tech, or state-of-the-art, during their initial time of implementation and use. Years later these systems may lack the functionality, speed, and storage capacity of more modern systems, making them somewhat obsolete. Still, many companies continue to still use legacy systems.

Many organizations continue to use legacy systems, even when they are clearly inferior to new technology. They do this for many different reasons. Here are some of the most common reasons a company chooses to continue to use its specific legacy system:

  • Current or ongoing projects or specific contracts might be tied to these legacy systems and require their use

  • Retiring a legacy system and switching to a new system can be very challenging, and often can not be done simultaneously, or with fluidity

  • Executives, stakeholders, and other key decision-makers can be adverse to change and conservative in terms of what they want to spend funds on

  • Investing in new technology and systems can be extremely expensive, time-consuming, and may come with additional recurring expenses that the company is not ready to take on

  • New technology systems take a considerable time to implement and they also take a lot of time in terms of training the staff with the systems

  • Companies might have data on a legacy system that is not easily transferred onto a new system
