This question is about histogram vs bar graph.

What are the advantages and disadvantages of a histogram?

By Zippia Team - Aug. 1, 2023

The advantages of a histogram are that it is a simple and versatile graph that is easy to put together, as well as being easy to read and interpret. Histograms can be used in many different situations to get the point across, and everyone's familiarity with bar charts, in general, makes them easy to read and work with.

Other advantages of histograms include their ability to effectively represent large data sets and visually depict data trends. Due to the fact that histograms group data into ranges, they can handle and display large amounts of data in a manageable and understandable way. Histograms also provide a visual representation of data distribution, making it easier to identify patterns, trends, and outliers within a dataset. This visual clarity aids in decision-making and problem-solving by providing a clear overview of the data.

The disadvantages of a histogram are that they are extremely focused on the number of "bins," or lines, and are heavily affected by the maximum and minimum of the variable.

Altering the max and min can alter the look of a graph dramatically, which can be misleading. Also, their simplicity does make it difficult to see the effects and distribution of the data.

Another significant drawback is that histograms cannot provide exact values or specific characteristics within the data set. Since the data is grouped into ranges or intervals, the original data is lost. For instance, if the bin range is 10-20, we can't determine whether a particular value was 15 or 19. This may limit our ability to conduct in-depth analysis or make precise predictions based on the histogram alone.

Additionally, histograms lack the flexibility to easily compare multiple data sets. Each histogram represents one variable and its frequency distribution, so comparing multiple variables or different categories within one variable can be challenging with histograms, requiring separate histograms for each variable or category. This can potentially lead to confusion and misinterpretation of the visualized data.

While histograms are useful for presenting and interpreting large volumes of data, they have limitations that make them less suitable for detailed analysis or comparison of multiple datasets.
