There are at least fourteen different levels of pharmacists. Overall, it depends on the company and industry.

Where you work in the field will determine your exact responsibilities. According to the healthcare website GoodRx, there are fourteen kinds of pharmacists:

  • Community pharmacist

  • Hospital pharmacist

  • Ambulatory care pharmacist

  • Informatics pharmacist

  • Home health and infusion pharmacist

  • Long-term care pharmacist

  • Specialty drugs pharmacist

  • Oncology pharmacist

  • Nuclear pharmacist

  • Industry pharmacist

  • Managed care pharmacist

  • Poison control pharmacist

  • Drug information pharmacist

  • Compounding pharmacist

Each one is a specialized area with specific duties. The most common one is the community pharmacist (can be referred to also as retail pharmacists) who works in store chains or local pharmacies. With this kind of pharmacy, you may start as a staff pharmacist and then rise to become a pharmacist manager.

Another common one is the hospital pharmacist (also known as a clinical pharmacist), who generally deals with more direct patient care by interacting with the hospital team to stay up-to-date with a patient's health and recommend medications.
