What are the pros and cons of being a state trooper?

Pros:

• Changing routine. If you are someone who thrives in an exciting, ever-changing environment, becoming a state trooper can be a good position for you. You are often doing different things on different days, and you are not just sitting at a desk all day.

• Helping others. If you have the desire to help others, being a state trooper can be a great fit for you. You are able to protect people in many different ways, and that can give you a very rewarding feeling of accomplishment.

• Growth opportunities. Becoming a state trooper gives you lots of different ways to grow in the profession as well. You can choose to take the path of going into management or other promotions.

Cons

• Dangerous work. Obviously, as state troopers deal with infractions of the law, the work that state troopers are tasked to complete is often dangerous. You need to be prepared as best as possible, but you may still find yourself in dangerous situations, and that can be difficult for many people.

• Emotional burden. State troopers may often see the worst of people, and this can be extremely traumatic. Some officers find themselves having a difficult time disconnecting after they get home from work, and that can lead to difficult family relationships as well.

• Mistakes are costly. There are many jobs where you can make a mistake and nothing terrible happens. However, being a state trooper is not one of those positions. State troopers have a lot of responsibility to protect people and any number of mistakes can have dire consequences.
