What are the pros and cons of being a vet tech?

Pros

• Room for growth and advancement. As you work with veterinarians and veterinary nurses as a vet tech, you gain insight, experience, and a specific skill set that can help you to move on to different careers in the medical field. You could do training or additional schooling to become a veterinary nurse.

• You help people and animals. Vet techs work to make appointments safer and smoother for everyone involved, including the animal patients. This is beneficial to not only the people and animals involved, but to the veterinarians and additional staff as well.

Cons

• Long hours. Vet techs may work shifts that can be 12 hours or more a few days a week. There are also times when you could not be working, but you are on-call, so you need to be ready to go in to work if needed.

• Physically demanding. Vet techs are on their feet for most of their shifts, and this can be difficult, especially if you have any difficulties with standing and walking for long periods of time. Sometimes, you need to lift heavy equipment as well.
